Why study this subject:
Czech nationals are required to continue their study of the Czech language and Literature, Czech History and Czech Geography up until the end of Year 10. Unfortunately, Cambridge no longer offer Czech as an IGCSE exanimated subject and for this reason it does not appear in our subject offer at PBIS this year.
Nevertheless, it is possible to continue studying the Czech language and take exams internally. By successfully passing the Czech Language and Literature Exam in Year 11, students will receive an Internally Grade Assessment (IGA) Qualification.
At PBIS we are very keen to support our Czech families and can offer the following two Routes to ensure that our students meet the mandatory requirement of studying Czech until the end of Year 10:
Route 1:
Students can select Czech as a native language in one of the blocks offered. This would mean that the student would only study four optional subjects instead of five. This option is recommended for students who wish to study Czech A at IB level as part of their IB Diploma Programme as this is a requirement by PBIS.
Note:
• This is a 2-year course and a good preparation for IB Czech A
• Students electing this route must continue with Czech in Yr11. It is not possible to change to another subject.
• All lessons scheduled in normal lesson timetable
• Students will take 1 less IGCSE
• Additional sessions of Czech Literature will be offered for EAL students/students who will study English B at IB
Route 2:
Students who wish to study five optional subjects and not study Czech studies in the main option blocks. This option is recommended for students who wish to study English A and one of the modern foreign languages (MFL), such as French, German or Spanish, at IB level as part of their IB Diploma Programme at PBIS.
Note:
• Route 2 student will not be able to study IB Czech A.
• The school will consider offering students off-schedule Czech studies depending on the number of students who express an interest in Route 2.
• Students will have the opportunity to study Czech individually.
This allows students to:
• for full set of IGCSEs in Yr10 and Y11
• continue the compulsory study of Czech in their free time and at their own pace
• take the opportunity of individual consultations
• to sit the Y10 tests (mid-year and end of year) together with students from Route 1
IB Entry requirements:
Students wishing to take Czech Literature at IB level must ensure that they opt for Route 1 and continue their Czech studies throughout IGCSE to ensure that they are prepared for either SL or HL in Year 12.
Pass rate to be excepted to IB Czech studies (Czech A - Czech Literature) is A* - C
Czech Ministry requirements:
Czech nationals are required to study Czech up until the end of Year 10.
