Week 5 thoughts…

Last week we thought about our study habits and how it is essential to keep going and remain motivated in order to succeed. Sometimes we hope that our attempt will be good enough but are surprised when we don’t succeed. This can be in our work, study or social life. Basically, we get out what we put in. We want the best for your son/daughter and so do you, but we also need to ensure that they want the best for themselves. They should consider a number of questions to provide them with direction:

  • Why am I doing what I am doing?
  • What do I want/need to get from it?
  • How am I going to make sure I stick to my plan?
  • How will I feel when I achieve?
  • How will I feel if I don’t achieve?

In other news the campus is thriving with activity. Students are focussed on their learning and there is a positive vibe around school. However, there are still some students who are unable to follow the uniform rules and I would like to ask you to support us in ensuring that they are dressed correctly in the morning. No students should be wearing jeans, jeggings or leggings (KS4/5) and shoes must be solid black (KS4). Students from all year groups will lose their social times if there are any uniform infringements until they rectify the issue. A reminder to KS5 students that they are required to dress smartly in business attire. Skirts and tops need to be modest and inappropriate logo t-shirts are not acceptable. We will once again go through this with the students in their tutor groups but can you also advise from home. Would the outfit they are choosing be suitable for joining you at your workplace?

This week we have been planning a number of events and these will be publicised soon.

Have a great weekend

Mrs Jane Cordes

Head of Campus Breakfast

In previous schools I have hosted a breakfast session which creates a forum for parents to ask questions face to face and to meet other parents. Many of you email me directly and many of you would not be able to attend at either the beginning or the end of the day due to work commitments. However, I am going to make this opportunity available and will host the first event on 22nd October 2019 at 0800. I look forward to seeing you there. If you are unable to attend and have any ideas of how to enrich the curriculum or offer your support then please email me jane.cordes@pbis.cz

Talk by Ricky Arnold, NASA Astronaut

On Thursday 3rd October, 10 students from PBIS had the opportunity to hear an inspirational talk by Ricky Arnold, an astronaut who has lived and worked on the international space station. Mr. Arnold described his role on the space station as twofold: working for a better quality of life on earth and understanding the ways in which humans can travel and survive in space.

Mr Arnold shared his experiences through a series of video diaries, detailing his journeys to space, including his very turbulent landings back on earth, as well as everyday life on the space station. We saw Mr. Arnold at work in space extending and developing the space station and found out how astronauts eat, exercise and experience the challenges of zero gravity (which apparently makes finding your headphones even more difficult than it is on earth!). Mr Arnold also outlined some of the amazing scientific activities taking place on the space station, including cancer research and cell regeneration.

Mr Arnold described his changed perspectives following his space travel, which include a greater understanding of our shared humanity and the importance of preserving the earth. He highlighted the astronaut’s unique insight into the fragility of our atmosphere when viewing the earth from space and explained how this had made him comprehend the importance of protecting our planet. While the audience got to see a small aspect of this very special perspective through Mr Arnold’s amazing videos from space, he explained that the only way for people to fully understand this is to see it for themselves through space travel. He believes that as many people as possible should travel in space. Could this be a future grand challenge for our PBIS STEAM club?

Mr Arnold rounded off his talk by sharing the tweet he posted on his final day at the space station, noting that these are also principles which we can fully embrace in international school communities.

H&M visit to our campus

For the past few weeks, students in Years 12 and 13 have been informed via Managebac that representatives of H&M will be giving a presentation in the IB study room about work study/work shadowing opportunities on Wednesday, October 9 at 12:30. At this time, interested students can learn more about the company as well as possibilities to gain work experience on a mutually-agreeable schedule. At last count, about 25 students had voiced interest in this. Please mention this to your child and encourage them to attend this presentation if they are interested in the fields of fashion, sales, marketing or logistics.

House Competitions: Languages

Today, we followed up last week’s popular activity of guessing the language of audio clips that parents and teachers had offered with a group house activity. Students attempted to decipher a difficult sentence about their house’s castle, in which every word was written in a different language. It was interesting to see the students work in groups and get their heads together to try to “crack the code” and have some fun at the same time.

Next week, we will go back to the initial activity we started on the first school day, and students will have the chance to polish that which defines their respective house’s identity, such as their house song, haka and slogan.

From now on, on a weekly basis, we will be providing you with a year-to-date tally of all of the respective house points gathered. This total will reflect individual students’ earning house points for things such as good behaviour and strong contribution to school life in and out of lessons, as well as from house competitions.

Creative Media : Foley recording

Mireldar is trying to record foley sounds for Jaques Tati's film Mon oncle. It is not an easy task when the hammering downstairs, drilling upstairs and metaphors from the English class next door keep cutting through the mix. It is still a good opportunity to test Reason's limiter plug-in in order to get rid of ambient noise.

Foley recording is not as easy as it seems. The challenge is to synchronize each sound with the image, and to mix all the sounds at appropriate volumes. Here is an example of student's work, with the sounds Mattia has recorded for the kitchen scene:

Y12 Residential Trip

“Last week, our year group went on a four day residential trip to Blanik to get to know one another and take part in team building activities. In teams, we worked with each other to complete a variety of tasks, ranging from helping each other through rope webs and the infamous ‘leaky pipe’ game.
The most memorable activity would be the rafting, where we built our own rafts and tested them to see if they’d float, which unfortunately they didn’t. We got to build our own shelters in the woods, our competitors being the teachers who built much better ones than us and we also learned how to start a fire using a tuna can. With the help of Patrick and the rest of the 3E staff, there’s a good chance we’d now survive in the wilderness! The trip was a great experience, as well as a fun and relaxing break from normal school life.” – Alexandra Pilařová, Year 12 Student

How many IB students does it take to build a raft that will float? Read more about Y12 residential trip here: https://pbis.fireflycloud.net/tutor-groups-7/year-12/y12-residential-trip-

PE

The PE department at Libus are going to run a house football tournament at lunch times prior to the half term break. Details and days the tournament will be held will depend on pupil sign up. From Thursday lunch time pupils can sign up to represent the house in football opposite the PE office where they need to write their name and house. They must do this by Wednesday 9th October so the PE team can organize dates and structure ready to proceed before half term.

Pupils will only play if they have football boots.

Boys and Girls U19 11-a-side fixture Vs ISP (away)

Our open age group teams started off their competitive season against ISP on Monday 30th September with an 11 a side fixture. The boys game saw PBIS have the first opportunity excellently saved by the opposing goal keeper only 5 minutes into the contest when Max fired from short range. The remainder of the first half was dominated by ISP until the last few minutes when PBIS pulled a goal back with a superb strike from Max in the last minute to make it 3-1. An improved performance in the second half from PBIS was rewarded when Evgeny scored after a long run with the ball before slotting neatly home. The final score of 4-2 was a much improved effort compared to last year and the team are looking forward to their trip to Budapest in the next coming week.

The girls team played an excellent first half and were unlucky to be training 1-0 to a very strong ISP team. Performances from Anna and Isobel ensured PBIS battled hard in defense and remained competitive throughout the whole game. Many changes were made by the new manager Mr Hampshire at half time which saw a change of approach to the game. Unfortunately this led to some mishaps and sloppy goals. This said, the performance was encouraging and bodes well for next weeks Budapest trip.

Boys U19 7-a-side fixture Vs IPS (Away)

The boys traveled to ISP again for a 7-a-side game against ISP in which they produced some wonderful football. Goals from Linus, Mateusz and Egor ensured the PBIS team ran home 5-0 winners. Another excellent performance from Mir Eldar in goal proves that his commitment to specialist goalkeeper training is paying dividends.

Upcoming fixtures and tournament

Next week sees both the boys and girls U16 teams play in a tri tournament at Libus on Monday 7th October against Riverside and Park Lane. Following this both U19 teams travel to Budapest on Thursday 10th October to compete in the NA football tournament.
